On August 30 at 10 AM a woman came to the Hospitality Center seeking help for her 19 year-old son. She explained that her bright and talented son had a full scholarship and was due to begin college. He had started back to western Pennsylvania but encountered car trouble and had to return home. If she could not find a way for him to get to school he would lose his scholarship. He is the first in his family to attend college and is majoring in business. The only bus was coming at 1 PM. Thankfully the churches of Upper Merion partner with the Hospitality Center offering vouchers for long distance transportation. We picked up the voucher then packed Steven and his belongings into the car and delivered him to the Greyhound terminal. To add to the drama, we were told that this bus is “notoriously late” and has a 50/50 chance of missing its connection with the only bus out of Harrisburg today. We said we were praying. Later we were told we might as well give up because the bus had not even arrived in Philadelphia yet and would almost surely be late. We said we were praying. Because of the generosity of kind individuals and the mercy of God, who cares about Steven and his education, Steven arrived that night, on time and has begun his sophomore year. Steven writes this: ![]() Steven McAlpine Dear Donors, I would like to express my sincerest gratitude for supplying me with my bus ticket back to my university. Without your help, I don’t know how I was going to get back to school. One of the many principles I live by is the one that states that I should do unto others as others do unto me. I greatly appreciate the help you provide to people in need, and hopefully after I finish my schooling, God blesses me abundantly so I can also help others and give back to organizations such as yourselves. Again I would like to say thank you and God bless.
Sincerely. Steven McAlpine |
